Around 140 tourists rescued after Hartbeespoort cable car shuts down Sa News


Johannesburg – Officials at the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway, north of Johannesburg, kicked into safeguard mode on Saturday evening after a mechanical disappointment constrained the framework to be closed down.

Around 15 individuals were stuck in three gondolas when they stopped on the cableway, only minutes after general supervisor Iain Gunn close the framework down.Gunn said he orchestrated the safeguard squad to be called.


The squad rose the cableway towers, achieved the gondolas and put the inhabitants into security bridles.They were then brought in a procedure comparative down to abseiling.


"We had around 125 individuals over the mountain having pizzas and ground sirloin sandwiches, unconscious that they had ceased the link," Gunn told News24.


He said helicopters were brought in to clear the youngsters and elderly from the highest point of the mountain.


Crisis vehicles were sent up the back of the mountain to recover the rest of visitors.


Everybody was represented and back at the base of the cableway by 18:30.


"There were no wounds, no risk to anyone. It is stunning that the wellbeing design we set up together more than five years back came into operation and ran predictably," said Gunn.The cableway would be shut while engineers directed a full review to discover the reason for the mechanical disappointment.
